Helen Field left her home (likely with her family) in 1920 to try motion picture work. Helen appeared as a child actor in a small number of films for Fox Film Corporation and The Universal Film Manufacturing Company, Incorporated, including the John Ford films Just Pals (1920), Desperate Trails (1921) and The Village Blacksmith (1922), and also in While the Devil Laughs (1921) and in Up and Going (1922) with Tom Mix.

The Antelope Valley Ledger Gazette, 15 February 1922, page ? :  “Friends of the petite and beautiful Helen Field will be interested in seeing what a clever little actress this Lancaster child has developed. Leaving Lancaster only a short time ago to enter the movies, she has accomplished phenomenal success and is being heralded as one of the most emotional of child actresses. Her work with Harry Carey in ‘Desperate Trails’ is some of the most heart touching and sympathetic acting in the picture.”
