Joseph Worrell

Joseph Worrell’s article, “On the Dragon Lady’s Trail: Rediscovering the Films and Image of Anna May Wong in Classical Hollywood Cinema” was recently published in Asian Cinema Studies Journal, Fall/Winter 2003, Temple University.

An avid cinephile of classic Hollywood cinema and reader of cultural studies, Joseph was the curator of a retrospective screening to pioneer Afro-American filmmaker, Oscar Micheaux. In cooperation with the Black Film and Video Network and the Get Reel Film Festival, one of Micheaux’s rare ‘race movies,’ Murder in Harlem (1935), was screened to an intimate and enthusiastic group of attendees in March 2002.

Another retrospective, honoring pioneer Asian actors Sessue Hayakawa (The Cheat [1915]) and Anna May Wong (The Toll of the Sea [1922]), followed in fall 2002. Both screenings were well-attended and sponsored in part by The Centre for Integrative Studies in Anti-Racism (OISIE, University of Toronto) and the Department of Anthropology, York University.

Mr. Worrell holds a B.A Hons. in English and History, University of Ottawa and was a former film studies tutorial assistant at Carleton University, Ottawa.
